Earth Day is the day dedicated to protecting our planet: a true green event that unites and mobilizes people around the world
It might seem strange that such an important and relevant issue as the
protection of our planet needs a dedicated day to ensure everyone remembers it and pays the right attention. But in truth, all truly important events deserve a day each year when they receive the focus they need.
Earth Day, celebrated one month and one day after the Spring Equinox, was created to
honor life on Earth and promote peace and is now a crucial event to
inform and educate citizens worldwide on caring for the environment and nature. In some countries, this day is part of an entire ecological week filled with
events, activities, and demonstrations on environmental protection.
The themes of Earth Day
Sadly, there are so many issues to address that a single day is no longer enough, considering how much and in how many ways our planet has been exploited in recent decades:
destruction of entire ecosystems, extinction of animals and plants, pollution of oceans and air, depletion of resources, the emergence of new diseases and an increase in existing ones.
The heart of this global event is to investigate
possible solutions to the disasters caused by humans and
find the right eco-sustainable alternatives to try to stop this relentless decline, which impacts the health of everyoneโnot just the Earth.
In particular,
this yearโs central theme is Restore our Earth: yes, there is a real need to restore the planet, because not even a pandemic that brought the world to its knees and apparently halted the global economy was enough to stop the damage caused by COโ emissions.
What can and should we do?
Repairing the huge damage caused so far and restoring Earthโs natural balance are slow and complex processesโbut certainly not impossible. Whatโs needed above all is
constant commitment from both nations and individual citizens around the world. The first step is to
take an interest and get informed on the topic:
the Earth Day website has created a map tracking all the initiatives taking place both virtually and physically worldwide; Covid cannot be an excuse to keep ignoring this issue, and those who want to can participate in all the meetings and round tables organized around these themes.
Everyone has their own role in the world and can, indeed must, do their part. In our small way,
here at BeetCommunity we have embraced a low environmental impact lifestyle, even striving to create an eco-friendly space: we limit paper usage in our
Coworking and are eliminating plastic entirely (starting with reusable coffee pods and including a tap water purifier); we commit to using natural, locally sourced products in the kitchen of our
Coliving; we prefer to walk or bike and encourage our guests to do the same by providing them with bikes to use. Itโs no coincidence that
all our spaces have an evident connection to nature;
if youโre curious, take a look at our photos and videos.
For us, protecting the planet is something to tackle every day and to always give the proper attention toโnot just once a year, though today we think itโs right to say it out loud!
